Although a SharePoint administrator can get storage metrics and information about list and large file sizes in SharePoint Site Settings, there are often requirements to get more in depth reports on files and folders.
SharePoint content is not as straight forward as your native Windows file system, as there is metadata and versioning (version history) space used by every document. In order to get a true picture of the storage space used by each file and folder, it requires the SharePoint API or other Microsoft web services (such as GRAPH), using programming (such as C#) or PowerShell to obtain this information.
How to get storage space used out-of-the-box
Storage capacity used in your SharePoint sites can be found by navigating to Site Settings => Storage Metrics:

While this is useful, it does not show which files or folders are using the space listed. In addition, it only reports for the current Site Collection, and not across multiple sites.

You can download the SharePoint Essentials Toolkit Community Edition for free to get many useful reports at no cost.
Below is the Item Inventory report which will show a list of all SharePoint lists, libraries, folders and file content, with storage space used, including file path lengths, total versions, author, etc…
Simply select the SharePoint sites and lists to include, and click ‘Run’.
